Longevity Bloomington Newsletter #4 - Immune System
Research Roundup: the beneficial effects of exercise on your immune system
Over the last few years, there have been many products advertised to "boost" your immune system. Most of these products are marketing scams that won't actually do anything beneficial. Luckily, there is something that you can do to improve your immune function: exercise.
How does exercise improve your immune function? By increasing your "immunosurveillance". This is a fancy term that is used to describe the processes by which cells of the immune system look for and recognize bacteria, viruses and other things that can make you sick.
This study showed a 28% reduced risk of developing an upper respiratory tract infection (nasal obstruction, sore throat, common cold) with moderate levels of physical activity.
What other things can you do to improve your immune function?
Eat a diet high in fruit and vegetables
Minimize stress
Get adequate sleep
Avoid excessive alcohol intake and smoking
Maintain a healthy weight
