Research Roundup: how can you best reduce the risk of a fall?
A 2017 study performed a review of the current research on the effectiveness of various interventions to reduce the risk of a fall. What did they find to be the most effective?
Exercise alone reduced the risk of injurious falls by 50%. The combination of exercise and vision assessment/treatment was the most effective. The exercise + vision assessment/treatment group reduced their risk of injurious falls by 83%! Stay active and regularly visit your optometrist!
What exercises should you perform to improve your balance? The combination of balance exercises and resistance training is the most effective intervention for reducing falls (Izquierdo, 2021).
